A Typical Tropical Plant and an Elegant Container Plant
The Flame Tree (Flamboyant) is one of the most characteristic deciduous plants of the tropics. It produces elegant, doubly pinnate leaves. The light green foliage contrasts beautifully with the bright red flower clusters, which are depicted on many postage stamps from tropical countries.
In our climate, the Flame Tree can be successfully grown in a pot or other suitable container.
Origin: Madagascar and the Caribbean Islands.
Growing from Seed:
The seeds can be sown indoors throughout the year. Soak the hard, relatively large seeds for about 12 hours in room-temperature water. Then plant them shallowly, about 0.5 cm deep, in moist seed-starting soil.
At a constant temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F), the first seeds should germinate after just 10–14 days.
Location:
As a tropical plant, the Flame Tree prefers bright locations, including full sun.
Care:
Plant young seedlings in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. To encourage a dense, well-branched growth habit, the Flame Tree should be pruned or pinched back from an early age.
Water generously during the growing season. From May to October, fertilize the plant every 3 weeks with fertilizer suitable for container plants.
If the container is kept outdoors during summer, choose a location protected from strong winds.
Under our climatic conditions, the Flame Tree usually begins flowering only after several years.
Overwintering:
This frost-sensitive plant loses its leaves as winter approaches. When kept in a dark location, it does not begin producing new foliage again until late spring.
In a bright location with temperatures between 10 and 20°C (50–68°F), it feels considerably more comfortable and often remains leafless for only a short period.
