Many plants require a light cycle (often 12/12 hours) to begin flowering or fruiting. A switch and relay or contactor combination is required to automatically turn a high power HPS lamp on and off. A standard timer that is used only for this purpose will usually arc-out and die very quickly. Great air circulation is great in the warmer months, but in the winter it can get too cold for optimal growth.
